Two people in hospital after apartment fire in Guelph

Fire crews responded to heavy smoke coming from a 7th floor apartment in downtown Guelph where an electric panel had caught fire on Thursday.

Around 9 am, six fire trucks and 24 firefighters responded to the blaze at 2 Quebec Street.

Two people were taken to the hospital. Deputy Chief John Osborne tells 570 News that their condition is unknown.

Crews quickly got the fire under control, however the 13 story building had to be evacuated; only tenants from the 5th floor below where allowed to stay.

Red Cross offered accommodations for displaced tenants in cooperation with Guelph Transit.

People are expected to be able to return home sometime Friday.

The Ministry of Labour and Fire Prevention continue to investigate.
