Special weather statement warns of freezing rain Thursday

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for a good portion of southern Ontario, including Waterloo Region and Wellington County.

It warns of the possibility of freezing rain Thursday morning, and throughout the weekend.

Environment Canada meteorologist Etienne Gregoire says it will be a quick system.

“It’s going to go through our area very rapidly tomorrow morning. We feel there is enough cold air that the leading edge of the rain tomorrow morning could fall in terms of freezing rain”.

It says the precipitation may start off as freezing rain early in the morning before quickly changing to rain as temperatures rise above the freezing mark.

Of greater concern, perhaps, is it says there’s the potential for a major ice storm for parts of southern Ontario Saturday and Sunday.

Environment Canada says it’s not clear at this point which areas may be most affected this weekend.

It says areas closer to Lake Ontario and near the Highway 401 corridor may remain just above the freezing mark much of the time limiting the amount of icing somewhat, while areas farther north and over higher terrain are likely to be impacted the most.
