Rangers look to weather Sunday Storm in potential division clincher

It’s seemed like a formality for quite some time.

But by the end of Sunday, the Kitchener Rangers could officially capture the Midwest Division crown.

The East Avenue Blue can clinch the Holody Trophy with a win in Guelph Sunday afternoon, but they need some help too.

They also need losses for the London Knights and Owen Sound Attack. They’re both on the road this afternoon in Ottawa and Sarnia respectively — both 2 p.m. starts.

London needs to lose in regulation, while Owen Sound can lose in OT or a shootout.

The last time Kitchener accomplished the feat? In 2007-08, the same year they last captured the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL Champions.

Both Kitchener and Guelph come in with seven games remaining in the regular season.

The Storm have struggled as of late, but they won’t be an easy team to beat.

They are in a battle for sixth place in the Western Conference with Saginaw and Windsor, and are coming off an 8-3 win in Owen Sound as part of Sportsnet’s CHL Saturday Showcase.

The Rangers recently split their four-game homestand, including a 3-2 loss to Oshawa Friday night.

Mike Farwell and Chris Pope have the pregame for the latest installment of the Highway 7 rivalry, starting at 1:30 p.m., on 570 NEWS.
