The upside to the cold: six GRCA parks open Saturday

With the ongoing extreme cold snap, some people will be staying indoors — but many others are going to get out and start enjoying the GRCA parks!

Spokesperson Cam Linwood says six Grand River Conservation Authority parks are opening Saturday, but ice fishing is only available at Belwood Lake.

Surprisingly, Shade’s Mill and Pinehurst Lake do not yet have the necessary 8-and-a-half to 10 inches of ice.

Cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing trails are ready to go.

Linwood advises anyone coming to the parks today to dress very warmly, and dress in layers.

And while parks staff will be around, if you get into an emergency in the cold, call 911.

Last year we had such a mild winter most of the GRCA’s parks were not open at all.

The GRCA says Shade’s Mills (Cambridge), Pinehurst Lake (North Dumfries), Rockwood, and Belwood Lake offer year-round access, providing limited winter maintenance for activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing, where available.

Guelph Lake also provides a small parking area for limited winter activities such as hiking.

Winter operating hours at these parks are 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., 7-days a week.

Shade’s Mills opens one hour early at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
