Police out in full force with RIDE checkpoints this New Year’s Eve

Expect to see police out in full force this New Year’s Eve.

Local officers are ramping up for a busy Sunday night around Waterloo Region, with RIDE checkpoints set to be in place through to early New Year’s Day.

Provincial police also getting ready to patrol Ontario Highways and keep an eye out for impaired drivers.

Norfolk County OPP Inspector Lisa Anderson says there is no safe level of alcohol consumption when it comes to driving.

“Everyone that operates a motor vehicle needs to realize that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption when getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.  Arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or stay overnight. It is not worth risking your life or the lives of others.”

If you are found to be over the legal limit you will face a 90 day driver’s licence suspension, a court appearance and your vehicle is impounded for 7 days.

Norfolk County OPP Constable Ed Sanchuck says they have seen 37 fatalities attributed to impaired driving on OPP roads this year.

Sanchuck says 19 of those fatalities were innocent victims.

“2017 makes for the fourth consecutive year to see a higher number of innocent people killed than impaired drivers who caused the collisions. So we are everyone to please, use some common sense.”

Sanchuck adds the most important thing if you are planning to go out this New Year’s Eve, is to plan ahead and arrange for alternate transportation.
