United Way campaign sheds light on ‘power of poverty’

Our local chapter of the United Way has launched a campaign, and it has a very specific message – “We need to change the power of poverty.”

Joan Fisk is CEO of United Way Waterloo Region Communities and spoke on 570’s Mike Farwell Show earlier this week.

Fisk says poverty can destroy families, limit futures, and tear at our social fabric.

“We’re trying to shed light on the power that poverty holds over people that actually get into that state, or are born into that state, and can’t get out. It holds you in a way that you can’t really imagine.”

Fisk says there are many families struggling locally, even though we live in a relatively wealthy region.

“We have approximately 55,000 people living at, or below, the level of poverty. Food bank usage is way up locally, and we have a sustainable food issue for families, community members, and even students that live here.”

United Way Waterloo Region Communities has a goal of raising $7-million to help support those in need in our region.
