Waterloo woman faces murder charge after suspicious death of 73-year-old

Regional Police say a 19-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a suspicious death investigation in Kitchener.

Spokesperson Cherri Greeno says it all began around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, when officers received reports of an injured male.

“Police arrived to an apartment at 140 King Street West, and found a 73-year-old man inside with serious injuries. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.”

Greeno says the deceased has been identified as Bernard Joseph Gallant, and they’re still working to determine the cause of death.

“The cause of death is still under investigation, and a post mortem is scheduled for today in Hamilton.”

Greeno adds that 19-year-old Megan Lynn Birtch of Waterloo has been arrested, and she has now been charged with one count of second degree murder in connection with the incident.

Gallant and Birtch were known to each other, although police won’t specify the nature of their relationship.

Birtch appeared in Kitchener court today.

Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to contact Regional Police at 519-570-9777 ext. 8654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
