FlyGTA Airlines to start twice daily flights from Waterloo to Toronto

There is some good news for commuters in our region who dread the drive down the 401 to get to Toronto.

FlyGTA Airlines announced today that they will be starting a new flight service for our region.

The flights will start November 6th and “FlyGTA is going to be starting a twice daily, return service to Billy Bishop Airport, on the island in Toronto and a 15 or 16 minute flight time is going to take the 401 out of the commute for some people,” said Tom Galloway, Waterloo Regional Councillor.

Although these flights won’t be practical for everyone and in no way will they alleviate congestion on the 401, Galloway says there is some benefits, “for business people who want to go to down town Toronto, it took us two and a half hours to get here today (Toronto), if you can do that in 15 minutes, or if you want to connect with Porter (airline), who are flying to various destinations it could be a great benefit.”

The flights will not carry very many people, but Galloway says, “we announced just the other day this RFP (Request for Proposal) that we are sending out to all airlines to fly from our airport (Waterloo International Airport) on an exclusive basis, and this is just another piece of that puzzle. It is just an eight seat passenger plane, but it is part of a larger picture and an important piece.”

The flights will make the 82 kilometer trip in just under 20 minutes and will cost you 129 dollars taxes and fees included.
