Headache for Waterloo students as multiple apartments behind schedule

It appears for the fourth year in a row, a large number of student apartments may not be ready for move-in day.

The City of Waterloo has now launched a tracking website to let students know how many rooms are still not complete.

So far, 1,490 rooms remain unfinished out of 2,289.

According to the City, they have little influence on the timing of occupancy.

Any issues with move=in dates need to be brought up with the landlord, or the landlord tenant board who settles these issues.

Waterloo City Staff says they will continue with inspections throughout the week and over the long weekend, but there is no guarantee they will be completed.

The City also points out that their requirements for completion may be different than what a landlord has promised.

The code sets out the minimum requirements for building safe and sound buildings and structures. The code addresses structural adequacy, fire and life safety, energy efficiency and promotes a healthy and safe environment for occupancy.

Students and parents looking for information on room completion can find it here.
