Five fatalities on OPP-patrolled roadways over Canada Day Long Weekend, none locally

It was a fatal long weekend on OPP-patrolled roadways across the province.

Five people died in collisions over the Canada Day Long Weekend, bringing the total number of deaths in 2017 up to 113.

An OPP report says two of those involved motorcycles, and that speed remains the lead causal factor.

Locally, Wellington County OPP laid over 120 Highway Traffic Act charges, 70 of those being handed out for speeding.

“In the end, we got about 70 speeding charges, 26 seat-belt charges, 5 hazardous moving violations, and 21 other Highway Traffic Act charges. Those were our top categories that we were focusing on,” explains Wellington County OPP Constable Marylou Schwindt.

Provincially, OPP laid over 5,800 speeding charges.

Constable Schwindt adds that she has a main concern on roadways, that continues to be a problem.

“One of the things that concerns me is the enforcement on the moving over legislation. We are concerned about drivers not following that, and putting our officers at risk.”

Over the course of the weekend, Wellington County OPP responded to 23 collisions.
