Banner of Guelph killers gets pulled from Canada 150 project

A banner campaign in downtown Guelph has attracted some unwanted attention.

The banners are part of Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations. Each poster displays a major story or milestone from Guelph’s last 150 years.

The campaign has received great reviews except for one banners that has sparked controversy.

The banner for the year 1986 shows a mug shot of the the four Wood brothers who were convicted in 1986 for the murder of Karen Thomson.

The banner was seen by many in the city as insensitive about a brutal crime where many of Thomson’s family still live.

The banner project is the work of the Downtown Guelph BIA who have issued a formal apology and have taken the banner down.

Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie took to Twitter to show his displeasure for the Wood brothers banner.

Guthrie says ” I do encourage a lot of people to go and look at this project, as I said there has been a lot of work put into it and this one particular banner issue, I mean obviously it was a mistake and it wasn’t maybe thought through all the way, so we can’t dismiss the whole project.”
