10,000 brown trout to call Grand River and Conestogo River home

Friends of the Grand River along with local students and volunteers will be out in full force today and tomorrow.

They’ll be on canoes on the Conestogo River and Grand River dumping ten-thousand brown trout into the water.

It’s an initiative that brings together our community and raises awareness to how we should treat our natural environment.

The stocking of the trout helps improve the water quality and the river’s eco-system.

Brad Knarr is the Stocking Co-ordinator, he explains how they release the fish. “We’ve got over ten-thousand fish from the fish hatchery and we’ll be transporting them in a large hatchery truck and then two pick-up trucks. The idea is people will go down the river in different places and release the trout one barrel at a time.”

Knarr adds the two-day task is not just about helping the environment, but working together as a group. “We do so much more than stocking, we plant trees, and we have a good time doing it.”
