“Stop the LRT thru Preston” lawn signs popping up around Cambridge

Over one-hundred signs have been popping up around the Preston area of Cambridge in the last few days.

In red, bold letters, the lawn signs say “Stop the LRT thru Preston.”

Residents in the surrounding area of Eagle and Pinebush are up in arms because they believe during Stage 2 of the ION LRT project, homes and businesses along that stretch will be completely destroyed to make room for the tracks.

The organizer of the group that has been planting signs tells 570 NEWS she’s had people come to her to cry about what could possibly happen. “For many of these people, they put their heart, soul, and personal savings towards their home. For many of them, they’re seniors living here and this is their final home. They have no where else to go.”

On the new sign campaign, Ward One Cambridge Councillor Donna Reid says some residents are fed up with the proposed route, so this is how they’re expressing themselves. “When citizens feel strong about an issue, they express themselves. On this issue, they’ve doing it by using signs. I don’t have a problem with that because it’s community engagement.”

Another woman told our newsroom she’d move if the proposed route that would take the train up Shantz Hill, onto Eagle, and then onto Pinebush/Hespeler was approved. “I have two kids, a family, and this would push us out of Cambridge and into the country.”

A small delegation will get five minutes to voice their concern about the proposed route at a special meeting on Wednesday.
