Rangers win wild one in Guelph and lock down sixth in West

The Kitchener Rangers will enter the 2017 OHL Playoffs as the sixth seed in the Western Conference.

The Rangers claimed the spot with a 6-5 overtime victory over the Storm in Guelph on Tuesday night.

For the second straight game, Nick McHugh was the overtime hero. He notched his 13th goal of the season, just 1:39 into the extra frame.

Kitchener also takes the season series against the Storm 6-2.

The Rangers almost blew a four goal lead, as Guelph stormed back and was ahead 5-4 in the third before Guelph native Connor Bunnaman scored his 35th to send the game to overtime.

It was also a milestone night for Darby Llewellyn, who played in his 300th OHL game, scoring on a penalty shot in the first period.

“It’s great resiliency that we were able to come back and get the tying goal there…But we’ve got to be better defensively and close out a lead.” said Llewellyn.

Bunnaman hit the 50 point plateau with his goal and Adam Mascherin scored as well, giving him 99 points on the season, with two regular season games left to go.

Kitchener is home to Erie on Friday. You can listen to the pre-game show on 570 NEWS at 7 p.m.

The Rangers close out the regular season in Owen Sound on Saturday night.
