Canada’s population now at 35 million, growth in Waterloo Region and Guelph

Canada’s latest census numbers show the country’s population reached 35.2 million in 2016, an increase of 1.7 million over 2011 — the strongest growth of all the G7 countries.

Waterloo Region’s population grew by 5.5 per cent.

Over 523,000 people live in the area, putting our region 10th among the country’s 35 census metropolitan areas.

The population in Guelph is now at over 151,000, an increase of 7.7 per cent.

It’s ranked 28th among the metropolitan areas.

Calgary was the fastest-growing census metropolitan area in 2016, with a growth rate of 14.6 per cent, followed by Edmonton at 13.9 per cent and Saskatoon at 12.5 per cent.

Among smaller urban areas, Sylvan Lake, Alta., posted a growth rate of 19.6 per cent, followed by Wasaga Beach/Collingwood, at 17.9 per cent and Okotoks, Alta., at 17.8 per cent.

Wednesday’s release is just the first of seven portions of 2016 census data to be released by Statistics Canada over the course of 2017; the next one, to be focused on age and sex, is scheduled for May.
