No small step; Blue Moon looking for new landing

A Waterloo Region staple, The Blue Moon in Petersburg is on the market.

The sale is still ongoing, but owner for the last 10 years Bev Finnegan tells 570 News she hopes the new owners will keep the history alive on Snyder’s Road.

“A lot of people love the tradition here,” says Finnegan. “They love the local Waterloo county fair,  and they love all the live music that’s here.”

She says the main part of the building, was built in 1848, a fact which is celebrated by the Township of Wilmot Heritage Designation plaque on the front of the building.

Over it’s 169 years, the establishment has collected a number of excess items which are now up for grabs in an online auction.

“There’s almost 700 items right now that we have prepared,” says Finnegan. “There’s dishes from England, there’s wine glasses from France, hockey pictures, Oktoberfest glasses from the 1970’s, beer signs, equipment.”

“Back in the old days, I guess when people used to come in, they would have a beer mug sitting aside for them with their own name on it. That’s one of the items we have for sale, there’s a bunch of those beer mugs.”

The Blue Moon was first built as a stagecoach stop, but has since been recreated into the restaurant it is today.

Just minutes from Kitchener, The Blue Moon has been in operation for well over a century-and-a-half and continues to reflect the simplicity of the time period in which it was constructed, while celebrating its German and Mennonite influences.
