Kitchener man earns Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship

A Kitchener man has earned an Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship after developing a kid’s hockey program back in 2002.

Steve Sanderson is the head custodian at Pioneer Park Public School who came up with the idea for the Panther Hockey Program after noticing that some students could not afford to enroll in hockey.

Sanderson says, “we started back in 2002. It’s a school-based hockey program, and all the equipment is provided to the kids for free, all the ice time is provided for free for any students that want to participate from grade 1 to grade 6.”

He was recognized for the award at Queen’s Park on December 1.

“It was quite an honour, especially being around a lot of deserving people, so it was quite humbling being around so many great people and I really enjoyed it, it was a lot of fun,” said Sanderson.

There’s no big plans for Sanderson after this, as he says he wants to keep the Panther Hockey Program going, and help it gain more speed, and gain more volunteers.

There are already 145 students who benefit from the program.
