Ontario Energy Minister launches new pilot project in Waterloo Region

Ontario Minister of Energy Glenn Thibeault was in Waterloo today to launch a new energy saving program aimed at small and medium sized businesses.

The project features the Ontario made ecobee smart thermostat that Thibeault says can save around $3,000 per year.

The project is being sampled in Waterloo Region and Brant County.

Minister Thilbeault was also on The Eric Drozd Show today.

He was asked about soaring hydro costs.

Minister Thibeault says a large part of the cost is due to major infrastructure spending and the choice to go clean,

“We had to make a choice to rebuild that (electricity) system, when we made that choice we also made the choice to make it reliable and make it clean.”

Thibeault adds, “we could have just said let’s build a coal plant on every corner and we would have had the cheapest electricity in the world, but you know we made a choice back then to do it right, and that came with a cost.”

Minister Thilbeault also acknowledged that the province must do more to help out families, and says the 8 per cent reduction off hydro cost will be in place next month.
