CP Holiday Train stops in Cambridge for local food bank

It’s Giving Tuesday, and the Waterloo Region food bank wants to remind us about the importance of food donations.

The CP Holiday train made its way into Cambridge today at 4 p.m. accepting monetary and food donations for the Cambridge Self-Help Foodbank.

The train has traveled across Canada for the past 18 years raising support and awareness for local organizations, with entertainment at the stops along the way.

Wendi Campbell is the Executive Director at the Waterloo Region food bank and she says donating to the train or the food bank itself can help many families in the region.

“One in twenty households in our community need some kind of food support,” says Campbell. “Last year more than 31,000 people in Waterloo Region accessed some kind of food assistance program, and it’s our food assistance network that we have here in Waterloo Region that makes that happen.”

She adds that rising hydro bills and other expenses in the winter always make the need around the holiday season greater.

Every dollar donated to the food bank can provide three meals to someone in need, and the most needed items this month include canned fruits and meats, soups and stews.
