Cambridge residents can weigh in on LRT in 2017

It will be early next year before Cambridge residents can weigh in on the preferred route for Phase 2 of Waterloo Region’s Light Rail Transit project.

That would extend train service from K-W to Cambridge, running from Fairway Road in Kitchener to the Ainslie Street Transit Terminal in Cambridge.

The delay is to allow regional staff more time to review the numerous options on the table.

Director of rapid transit, Darshpreet Bhatti, tells the Record, “We’re trying to refine what we have to make sure that when we come to the public we’ve done as much as we can at a planning level to say these are the options and this is why we think this particular one is better compared to all the other ones.”

One issue officials hope to address is where a potential GO Transit station would be located.

Bhatti says that would be key to where to place the LRT route.

At this point, LRT service to Cambridge is not set in stone.

Provincial and federal funding for Phase 2 would be a critical factor in making that a reality.
