Kitchener neighbourhood celebrates Diwali tonight

It may still be a week away, but Diwali celebrations are planned for this evening at the Victoria Hills Community Centre.

This is the second year the Festival of Lights is being celebrated at the community centre.

Nadia Mohammad with the Victoria Hills Neighbourhood Association tells 570 News that around 300 people are expected to show up from 5:00-11:30 tonight.

“There will be fireworks for the first in this community (…) and there will be a cultural show that will include performances by children and women and some video clips of Diwali from India.”

There will also be a Rangoli exhibition, where floor patterns are made out of coloured rice, dry flour, coloured sand or flower petals.

She adds these types of celebrations are great for the community.

“It helps bringing people together, they get a sense of community.”

The association had to get special permission from the city to have fireworks outside of the regular holiday timeframe.
