School Bus Safety Week focuses on creating a “Bully Free Zone!”

Monday marks the start of School Bus Safety Week and the Ontario School Bus Association is focusing on creating a Bully Free Zone on buses.

Penny Phibbs is the General Manager with Stock Transportation, the company behind many school buses and charter vehicles in Waterloo Region.

She tells 570 News that the school bus is an extension of the classroom and kids should feel safe.

“What is held at school should be held on the bus as well (…) it does happen unfortunately, we only have a driver driving and it’s hard to keep track of all the bullying that goes on.”

When it comes to Stock Transportation, Phibbs says she has safety meetings with her drivers every month and focuses on making sure they are obeying the speed limit.

“Put you child or grandchild on that vehicle and now think about it just for a moment, and just let it sink it for a minute (…) we really need to stop and focus on what is important.”

On Wednesday, make sure to give your driver a high-five and say thank you! It’s School Bus Driver Appreciation Day on the 19th.
