Police investigating after memory garden vandalized in Guelph

Police are investigating after a memorial garden for families to mourn abortions and miscarriages was vandalized in Guelph.

Constable Mike Gatto says it happened sometime Sunday night at the Guelph and Area Right to Life Memory Garden on Norfolk Street.

“Overnight on October 10th, culprits spray painted a bunch of statements on the garden and left behind various items such as tampons and condoms– all against this memory garden being put together.”

Gatto says protesters were set-up around the garden just a few days earlier, and wants to remind everyone that vandalism is considered public mischief.

“There was a protest at the garden a few days earlier before this incident happened– so obviously there is some public disinterest in having this here. But it’s unfortunate that they have to turn to vandalism to make their point. Damaging property of any kind is public mischief and is a criminal charge. If we are able to figure out who did the damage here, there is a good chance they are going to be charged criminally with public mischief.”

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Guelph Police at 519-824-1212 ext. 7260 or CRIME STOPPERS at 1-800-222-TIPS.
