Royal Medieval Faire returns to Waterloo Park today

Today marks the 19th year for the Royal Medieval Faire in Waterloo Park.

The event offers live performers including a continuing story arc of the royal family, sword fighting, dancing and more.

There are also food vendors selling items including their famous “turkey legs”, and other vendors selling hand-crafted jewelry, leather items, weapons among other things.

Longtime professional fighter for the festival Carly Derderian says that she never fails to drop some cash at some of the stalls, even when she’s on the clock.

“Oh honey, if you need to get jewelry for your girlfriend or your wife, that is the place to go. There are occassionally leather workers that come in to make armour and stuff like that but especially, especially the jewelry. It is to die for. The effort that gets put into it is just astounding and I always spend so much there.”

She adds that although it has hard work and a lot of practice, she loves fighting in the festival as it tests her physical and mental memory, and keeps her in shape.

“And it inspires so many kids,” says Derderian. “Especially being a girl, for me it makes me feel so proud that I can show women what they can do and show young girls that they can do it.”

Derderian gave a sneak peak of the story arc for this year, saying the King is still missing on his adventures and the Queen is about to leave as well, so a fight will no doubt break out over who will take over the kingdom.

The faire is family friendly and will take place in Waterloo Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

Costs to enter the park are $5 for children and $10 for adults.
