Around 60 fire fighters worked to put out a fire at the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market.
Smoke was seen coming from behind the Food & Crafts entrance, and along the side of the building.
Deputy Fire Chief Dale Martin says construction crews were repairing the roof using a propane torch, which could have been the source.
He says as soon as they arrived on scene they could see black smoke coming from the building.
“Right away we attacked it, but the fire was between the roof and the ceiling inside so we had a hard time getting to it. We had to trench cut the roof just to get water into the building.”
Martin says they haven’t determined the cause.
However he says construction work could have had something to do with the fire. “While we were on our way, we got notified that there was a fire on the roof. There were roofers working on the roof using a propane torch.”

Everyone was evacuated from the building safely. No word on a damage estimate just yet.
The main building was destroyed by a fire in 2013.
