Side by side cycling coming to Waterloo Region

Get ready for side by side cycling.

The plan was given regional approval Tuesday.

Although three cities and two townships are preparing to adjust by-laws to the regional rules, Wellesley and Woolwich Townships will not.

Mayor of Wilmot Township, Les Armstrong tells 570 News that it’s important everyone on the roads know what the rules are.

“Cycling is a nationwide thing that everyone is promoting (…) I think we need to push for an educational program for both cyclists and motorists.”

He adds it would be hard to enforce.

“Even if the by-law is in place, there seems to be a lot of people who ignore it anyway, we have to try and encourage the public to be more responsible for themselves, as well as others on the road (…) it’s one thing to be right and be doing something and another thing to be ‘dead right’ and doing it.”

Regional Staff recommended against the by-law saying it would be confusing with different rules in different areas.
