Cambridge bans sale of pets from stores

Cambridge city council has banned the sale of pets from retail stores.

City council approved the move last night, but will allow the lone pet store in the city to phase out the practice over the next three years.

Animal rights advocates had been pressing the city to take this action for several years, arguing many of the dogs and cats sold come from mass production operations.

They maintained the animals were often sick resulting in unexpected and hefty vet bills for their owners.

One of those advocates, Angela Cowan, tells today’s Record, she wants the city to be diligent in dealing with Number 1 Pet Centre, saying “Every month that goes by, there’s another hundred puppies being sold out of that store.”

Debbie Corey owns that store, and tells the paper, she doesn’t get her animals from so-called puppy mills, adding, “I’m not dealing with that kind of a place. I stake my reputation on it.”
