The trial for two men charged with first-degree murder in the death of Tim Bosma will begin Monday in Hamilton.

Bosma left his Ancaster home on May 6, 2013 to meet with two men who wanted to take a test drive of the pickup truck he was selling. He was never seen alive again. Bosma’s body was found “burned beyond recognition” more than a week later.

Dellen Millard, of Toronto, and Mark Smich, from Oakville, Ont., are both charged with first-degree murder. Lawyers for both men have said they will plead not guilty to the charges.

Jury selection wrapped up last week. Justice Andrew Goodman said the trial is expected to last at least four months and could go longer.

A trial that long is not unusual, criminal lawyer Ari Goldkind said Sunday.

“The [James Forcillo] trial lasted three months. To me, that case presented much bigger challenges. You certainly have a lot of smoke in this case and it usually takes two or three months to find out if there’s fire,” Goldkind said.

Bosma, 32, left behind a wife and a young daughter. His death rocked his tight-knit Dutch community in rural Hamilton and made headlines across the country.
