Outwater’s tenure as music director of K-W Symphony to end after 2016/17 season

Ten years of guiding the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony for Edwin Outwater will come to an end following the next season.

The Symphony has announced Outwater will conclude his tenure as music director following the 2016/17 season.

He will then be given the title of Music Director Laureate, while Raffi Armenian, who currently holds that title, will become their first Music Director Emeritus.

Outwater says, “It is one of the great joys of my life to work with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.”

In explaining his reasons for moving on, he says “As an artist, it is always my responsibility to grow and evolve. It is for this reason that I am moving on to new musical adventures and responsibilities.”

Those new projects include his role as Director of Summer Concerts at San Francisco Symphony and Music Director of the Sierra Summer Festival in California.

Board Chair Catherine Copps says, “His charisma, along with his ability to engage with anyone and everyone about music has been an incredible asset to the KWS. Speaking on behalf of the Board, I thank Edwin for his strong artistic leadership and the growth that we have seen thus far. The KWS was fortunate to be able to keep Edwin for so many years and we now understand that he needs to move forward to pursue his other work. We look forward to celebrating his work over the next two seasons.”

The K-W Symphony plans to begin the process of looking for a replacement in the coming months.
