Open Doors Waterloo opening our region

It’s a chance for us to see part of our region we normally wouldn’t.

On Saturday, businesses, buildings, and places will let us inside for “Doors Open Waterloo”; in its 13th year.

There are 44 locations across Ontario hosting Doors Open events. The movement began in 1984 in France, slowly growing before Toronto launched the first event in North America in 2000.

Karl Kessler with the event tells us, there are 40 locations taking part region-wide.

“It’s a very popular annual open house event,” says Kessler. “Sometimes people get into these places because the architecture is interesting, sometimes it’s because it’s a heritage site and sometimes it’s just interesting for what’s going on inside the building or place.”

This year’s theme is sports, and 10 of the locations surround the theme, including the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. Kessler explains why they chose the theme.

“Keeping with the Pan and Parapan Am Games, and Sports Ontario declared 2015 the Year of Sport, so we tied into that.”

“There are lots of new developments happening in the region in the last decade and lots of new buildings, especially around the University campuses. Our event gets people inside these buildings. You drive by them and walk by them all the time and wonder what goes on inside; this is a chance to see what goes on inside.”

Since the program launched in Ontario in 2002, nearly $49 million has been invested in host communities.
