Kitchener mayor wants to develop plan with other mayors to help Syrian refugees

How can we help?

That question is being asked by individuals who want to help Syrian refugees.

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic wants to meet with Mayors and City councillors from the Federation of Municipalities this month to develop a plan.

He says organizations and individuals across the province are also teaming up to help refugee families. Two families from Syria and Iraq will be sponsored by the Mennonite Central Committee.

In a statement to 570 News the MCC says:  Mennonite Central Committee has been, and continues to be, actively responding to the global refugee crisis, including Syria and Iraq. We are committed to welcoming refugees and encourage those interested in sponsoring refugees to contact our Refugee Resettlement Program Coordinator Moses Moini at 519-745-8458 ext. 267 or visit mcco.ca/supportingrefugees to donate towards resettlement.

Mayor Vrbanovic adds Kitchener has a history of helping those in need.

“I believe our community has always shown itself to be caring and compassionate. We want to make sure we’re ready to do that again if we’re presented with that situation.

Mayor Vrbanobic says Canada helped refugees after the Vietnam War in the 70’s and the war in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990’s.
