Harper received by welcoming crowd in Kitchener

A sea of blue received the Federal Conservative Leader at Bingemans in Kitchener on Wednesday evening.

No new announcements were made as Stephen Harper touted his party’s plans.

He was joined by local Conservative candidates Peter Braid (Waterloo) and Stephen Woodworth (Kitchener-Centre).

Cambridge-North Dumfries Tory incumbent Gary Goodyear was there as well.

“I thought the message came across very well,” says Goodyear. “He’s a funny guy when he has to be, and he made some jokes and bridges where he needed to make a contrast with the opposition.”

Unlike an event earlier in the day, no protesters or hecklers were in attendance.

For the second time in this long election campaign, Conservative supporters have heckled the media at a Stephen Harper rally.

Last month, it was about the Mike Duffy trial — at an event in Welland, it was the Syrian refugee crisis.

The catcalls came as Harper was taking questions from journalists, almost a week after the world was riveted by the image of a dead Syrian toddler on a Turkish beach.

One supporter questioned whether the government should also be blamed for children drowning in pools.
