New St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market building officially open

The St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market comes full circle today.

It’s the official grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the facility, rebuilt in the aftermath of a devastating fire that gutted the main building.

Jeff Leal, Minister of Agriculture, says it’s a big day for the region.

“Your dedication and commitment to rebuilding so quickly after the fire showed just how important this farmers market is — not only to the vendors, but the local St. Jacobs community as farmers, and indeed all of Ontario.”

Regional Chair Ken Seiling spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony. He was also at the original ribbon cutting ceremony.

“I was here many many years ago when the first building opened up. Not only is it a great show place for agriculture and the community but it is a meeting place and a sense of community that these buildings have for us.”

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic also stopped by. He says today shows just how supportive our community can be.

“You saw that when the tragedy of the fire happened a couple years ago and they heard from people all around the world who had memories of this market. Seeing it so alive and vibrant now speaks well for our region going forward.”

The building burned down in September of 2013. No one was injured.

That fire happened exactly two years ago tomorrow.

It caused $2-million dollars in damage.

No one was hurt.
