Waterloo Taxi launches app to compete with Uber

Waterloo Taxi is launching their new app to help level the playing-field with Uber.

The free app will be available to download starting Tuesday and will allow users to request a cab, pay directly with their credit card or through PayPal, and see exactly where the taxi is on a digital map.

Waterloo Taxi president Peter Neufeld told 570 news why they decided to create a service like this.

“We wanted a stand-alone app due to some issues within the industry itself, like Uber coming along and people showing an interest in having an app that they can use to access a taxi.”

The service wasn’t just created in response to Uber’s presence in the region. The app was also designed to be more convenient for passengers and introduce new features.

“People have said there have been mistakes made when they called to get a cab, like the address was entered in wrong. There won’t be any mistakes with the app because it’s a direct GPS system,” explained Neufeld. “The app will also have features that Uber does not. You’ll be able to communicate with the driver yourself, like if you said originally you’d be at the front entrance but change your mind, you’ll be able to send a direct message to the driver to notify him.”

Waterloo Taxi is offering a promotion to help boost the use of their app. They are giving anyone who downloads it between September 1st and 3rd a free ride if they use the promotion code 777.

Neufeld said he is hopeful that the app will be successful and that he believes it is as good, if not better, than Uber.
