401 closed overnight for ongoing Fountain Street bridge-work

The 401 will be closed in Cambridge tonight from Highway 8 and King to Hespeler Road.

The closure takes effect starting tonight at 10:00 pm until Sunday at 7:00 am.

It’s for continued work on the Fountain Street overpass.

Liane Fisher with the Ministry of Transportation told 570 news that workers are putting in girders.

“We saw a closure in the spring for the old Fountain Street bridge to be demolished, and works been ongoing to replace that bridge. We have these long-span girders to install for the new bridge that is what is causing the overnight closure of the 401.”

During the closure, westbound traffic will be routed down Hespeler Road to Maple Grove Road, then to Sportsworld Drive to King Street East to Highway 401 West.

Eastbound traffic will be re-reouted down King Street East to Sportsworld Drive, then to Maple Grove Road to Hespeler Road to Highway 401 East.

Fountain Street is expected to reopen on October 18th.
