Tourism in Waterloo Region could benefit from low Canadian dollar

With the low Canadian dollar, travelling out of the country right now can be difficult and expensive, but tourism could see a boost because those coming into the country are seeing more bang for their buck.

Waterloo Region has its share of attractions for locals and travellers alike such as Oktoberfest and The Blues Festival and could see a lot more visitors.

It isn’t known if and how much of a boost in tourism the Region will see, but Minto Schneider, CEO of Waterloo Regional Tourism Marketing Corporation is optimistic.

“One of the main factors will be Canadians who choose to stay North of the border because of the high American dollar…that puts quite quite a dent in your travel budget if you’re trying to buy U.S. dollars with Canadian right now.”

Schneider says they do some marketing that goes to the U.S. but is not necessarily targeting it.

The corporation is also waiting on some results from a survey conducted at the Blues Festival earlier in the month. This will give them a better idea of how many visitors came in from outside of the region, and where they came in from.

These details, which include how many locals attended in comparison to previous years should be available within the next few weeks.
