Kitchener Rangers sign goaltender Luke Richardson

Another goalie has signed with the Kitchener Rangers.

The team inked 2015 fourth-round selection, Luke Richardson.

Kitchener has four backstops under control right now. Richardson joins Dawson Carty, who finished last season as the back-up, third stringer Matthew Greenfield, and St. Louis Blues property Luke Opilka.

The 16-year-old Richardson played “AAA” last season for the North Central Predators, and made an appearance in the 2015 OHL Cup.

He’s excited to finally put his name on the dotted line.

“It feels great,” says Richardson. “It’s a huge honour to be signed by such a great organization.”

He’s hoping to make the club in his first attempt, and he says GM Murray Heibert has told him he has that opportunity.

“I have a good shot, he says of making the team this year, and hopefully in the future as well,” says Richardson. “My goal is to get a spot on this roster and I feel I have a good shot at doing that.”

Richardson is a big kid, standing at 6-foot-6, weighing 155 lbs, but he doesn’t rely solely on his frame.

“I’m a calm goalie. I stay calm in the big moments, and just like playing in big moments,” claims the Barrie native.

Calm may be an understatement of his demeanour.

He models his play after perhaps the game’s best, Carey Price.

“I just love his positioning, he has good rebound control and he’s able to stay calm all the time.”

Richardson knows he has some work to do off the ice before he gets to training camp.

“Just try and build as much strength as I can coming up in the next few weeks and play my hardest,” says the newly signed Blueshirt.
