Be mindful of pets during heat, SPCA says

Another hot day is expected in Waterloo Region and the KW Humane Society is out with a reminder to pet owners to not keep pets locked in hot cars.

Ontario SPCA  Agent with the KW Humane Society, Jeff Letson, tells 570 News what can happen if you leave a pet in a hot car:

“When you have really high, extreme temperature, there are incidents where we will have to get into the vehicle and remove the animal. At that point, the person could be charged with cruelty to animals with a max charge of $60,000, two years in prison, and you can lose the right to own, care for, or live with animals for life.”

Letson says the best thing pet owners can do is to leave their pets at home:

“If you can, bring someone else with you to walk around with the dog outside, which is also a possibility.”

Reports of dogs left in cars have decrease, Letson explains:

“There is a reported decrease, so this last weekend there were only two reported incidents which is a good thing.”

Environment Canada expects the heat to break in parts of southern Ontario Thursday.
