Bull-on-a-rope rodeo will go ahead in Cambridge, despite councillors concerns

Critics call it a bull-taunting rodeo and it will go ahead in Cambridge, despite councillors raising concerns of animal mistreatment.

The Portuguese Oriental Sports Club will host the annual bull-on-a-rope rodeo as part of its fundraiser this weekend.

Some have criticized the events saying animals are kept in crates and allowed to wander the arena floor, as people try to annoy them by waving a poncho or umbrella under their nose.

The Cambridge Humane Society’s executive director Bonnie Deekon says the event doesn’t break any laws or rules.

“Do we like it? No. Absolutely we don’t. However, I have been there for 15 years, and in the last six years, there has been a new company out at the Cambridge facility. I have never seen an accident, I have never seen anyone actually touch the bull, other than the handlers themselves.”

Deekon says the Bulls are managed by 6-8 handlers and the animals are kept in pens that are air conditioned and the fences are solid so the animals can not get hurt.
