Local doctor helping out at Pan Am Games

We are well into the Pan Am Games and all eyes are on the athletes.

Thousands of athletes from 41 different countries are all hoping for gold, but what happens if a competitor gets seriously injured during the games?

That’s when someone like Dr. Doug Dittmer of Grand River Hospital steps in.

“Most of the countries have their own medical teams, but sometimes thing happen and they need a local physician who has privileges in this province to be able to order x-rays or to get medications for the athletes that their own country’s doctors or therapists can’t do.

He adds during the games itself, his job is to be invisible and work with teams to make sure their athletes are performing their very best.

Dittmer has worked at three Paralympic Games and was in Vancouver for the Winter Olympics in 2010.
