President and CEO of Grand River Hospital says region will need 150 more beds in 10 years

The President and CEO of Kitchener’s Grand River Hospital says the region will need the equivalent of another hospital in ten years, to handle growth and an aging population.

The Record reports that Malcolm Maxwell says the region will need another 150 beds by 2025.

Maxwell told a group of local councils, there is some capacity to add about 50 beds at Grand River and Cambridge Memorial Hospital respectively, but he says there is not much room to add beds at St. Mary’s General.

Maxwell says there are some ways to accommodate the growth without adding beds, by increasing the number of procedures that can be done in walk-in clinics.
