Rosie O’Donnell and Cynthia Nixon to help writer Staceyann Chin’s play get produced in NYC

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A play about a lesbian activist’s journey to single motherhood will be produced this fall downtown with some help from Rosie O’Donnell and Cynthia Nixon.

The off-Broadway company Culture Project said Thursday it will team up with O’Donnell to produce “MotherStruck,” written and performed by Staceyann Chin, a poet, writer and performance artist. Nixon will direct.

Chin made a name for herself with HBO’s Def Poetry Jam series, solo performances across the country and her memoir, “The Other Side of Paradise.”

In the show, Chin explores how a single black lesbian chose to become a mother and “explores how the process changed her life and how she makes peace with what she learns from this profound experience.”

It begins performances Sept. 24.
