NDP won’t support back-to-work legislation for striking teachers

The union representing Ontario’s high school teachers says it’s extremely disappointed that the province has decided to legislate an end to strikes at three school boards.

The government tabled back-to-work legislation on Monday for the striking secondary school teachers.

N-D-P Leader Andrea Horwath says her party won’t support the Liberals’ motion for unanimous consent to get it passed, but the government could use its majority to pass it by Thursday.

That would mean more than 70-thousand students in the Sudbury-area, Peel Region and Durham Region — who have been out of school for up to five weeks — would not return to class until Friday at the earliest.

Union president Paul Elliott says in a statement that Premier Kathleen Wynne and the Education Minister Liz Sandals are subverting the bargaining process with legislation.
