Western University President gets big payout after move from University of Waterloo

Western University paid its president nearly a million dollars last year, but information shows Amit Chakma was paid more in 2009, after a move from the University of Waterloo.

Chakma started as Vice-President at the University of Waterloo in 2001, but left in July 2009 for the presidential position at Western University in London.

The Sunshine List shows that Chakma was paid $737,640.48 plus $3,505.20 in benefits from the University of Waterloo.

He was also paid $220,000.02 plus $9,294.36 in benefits for his time at Western University in 2009.

His total pay for 2009 was a whopping $972,440 dollars, which is $5,000 more than his 2014 pay at Western University.

Officials with the University of Waterloo say the large figure was because of “earned leave” entitled to Chakma as part of his contract.

More than 1,700 people, including faculty members at the Western University, have signed an online petition calling on university senators to bring a non-confidence motion against Chakma next month.
