Future Shop employee seeking legal advice over severance

Over a dozen workers have already contacted Lior Samfiru, Partner, Employment and Labour Law, Samfiru Tumarkin LLP in Toronto over their severance pay.

Future Shop says they complied with provincial standards when calculating severance for their employees.

Samifru was a guest on 570 Midday Show with Eric Drozd and says those standards only cover a fraction of what employees are owed.

The longer you work, the older you are and the more senior position you have and the more severance is owed to you. When you apply that to an individual you get a significantly greater amount that what those provincial standards are.”

Samifru adds he has spoken with over a dozen employees who are receiving between 20 and 50 per cent of what they are owed and hopes the company will negotiate before any legal action needs to take place.

We approach them to negotiate in good faith understanding that these people are good employees and the reason that the stores have closed down has nothing to do with the performance of these individuals. Be far with them, meet your legal obligation and get these people proper severance.”

Future Shop locations in Kitchener and Cambridge have been closed and the location in Waterloo will be converted into a Best Buy.
