Declining enrollment at WCDSB schools could mean job cuts

Funding for the 2015-2016 school year will remain at $22.5-billion.

The money will be allocated differently, with the spending per student actually increasing, because of declining enrollment.

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board says it’s been seeing enrollment drop for the past few years.

For that reason, it could lead to layoff notices for teachers.

“In terms of enrollment, we’re expecting about 140 at this point this year than we currently have. That will translate into some layoffs” says Shaysh Maharaj, with WCDSB. “Because we do still have to balance the budget, other programs and services and other staff may be affected as well.”

The board needs to figure out how many teachers it needs to budget for, and soon.

The board was still discussing today’s announcement by the Liberals, but said in an email, “The teachers’ contract stipulates that the union must receive by March 31 of each year a notice of the total number of potential teacher reductions that may become necessary due to budget constraints. This happens annually.”

It says, any necessary layoff notices would have to go out by May 1.
