Spring is here and it’s time to get gardening

Today is the first full day of Spring, although it may not feel like it outside.
A local gardening expert says now is the time to start thinking about your gardens and lawns.

Perry Grobe is the co-owner of Grobe’s Nursery & Garden Centre and says for those eager to get out in the backyard, there are some flowers and even vegetables that can be planted in the next few weeks.

“There will be the opportunity for things like Pansies that will take the frost, and perhaps the first of the vegetables can go in. Peas and other cold crops can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked.”

Grobe adds planning your garden out and heading to a nursery in the off peak season are important steps in having a successful gardening season.

“One of the things they should be doing now is planning what they are going to do, thinking about how they are going to implement it and getting the information they need in order to make the right decision on which way to go. Now is a good time because no one is near as busy as they are during the height of season and they can get those answers quickly.”

He also has some tips to ensure a great garden and lawn this year.

“In their garden beds they want to try to incorporate some organic matter into the soil. The organic patter will help to retain moister and retain nutrients and lighten the soil mix up.”

For those looking for a great lawn, Perry says raking is important to do as soon as the lawn is firm enough in order to remove any debris and ensure a healthy growth.
