The Wizard of Oz turns the Dunfield Theatre into the yellow brick road

The yellow brick road has wound its way to the Dunfield Theatre.

Dorthy, played by AJ Bridel, who is best known as the runner up on the CBC reality show ‘Over the Rainbow’ and as the title role in Peter Pan is joined by the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and of course her faithful dog Toto.

Executive Producer with Drayton Entertainment, Steve Roth, tells 570 News this is a great way to introduce live theatre to your family.

“It brings so many families to the theatre and for a lot of them it’s their first experience with live theatre and they leave just loving it. To see these characters lt’s a different demographic that comes to the theatre and we love it.”

The theatre held an open casting call back in January looking for children in Waterloo Region to play 35 munchkins and hundreds of children came out. Roth says it has been great working with them.

“It really brings an excitement to a show when we invite local children to be a part of it. To see them soak it in and be able to interact with the first rate talent we bring from across the country to the Dunfield Theatre is just awesome and the kids are loving it and I know audiences will love watching them as well.”

The theatre also held an open dog call for the roll of Toto and the honour went to local pup Flynn.

“Both the kids and the dogs are just a delight. When Dorthy sings ‘Over the Rainbow’ and there is little Flynn playing Toto sitting beside here it’s a lot of fun to watch and a real treat.”

Roth adds tickets are already 80 per cent sold and adds they are expecting to see a complete sell out soon. The show runs from March 4th through to the 29th.
