10:00 – Teacher’s FB posts/extreme cold
Jane, local concerned parent
The outcry continues following last Friday’s decision to close schools in Waterloo Region. Parents were left scrambling, many learning that both boards had implemented a new policy in the fall that stated schools would be closed when temperature reach -35 or colder. We spoke with Kitchener Conestoga MPP Michael Harris on Monday, who criticised the decision to close…and we spoke with a rep from the WRDSB yesterday who defended that policy – but said the decision to close would be reconsidered. We heard from you, our listeners, many of you parents – and now, we speak with a parent who has two kids who love their teachers. However, she brought something to our attention yesterday…FB posts of her teacher friends’…rejoicing in the news of a cold day, and calling it a ‘perk of the job.’

10:30 – Elizabeth May – anti-terror
Elizabeth May, Leader, Green Party of Canada
Elizabeth May has served as the leader of the Green Party of Canada since August of 2006. It was October 22nd of 2014 – a day we all remember – that she was in lock-down on Parliament Hill. In her recent opinion piece, she writes “I remember who hid in a closet and who ran toward gun fire. The guy in the closet is now planning to concentrate the powers of the state in his own hands while converting the Canadian spy agency into a secret police with virtually unlimited powers.” Bill C-51, or the anti-terror legislation has passed through second reading, to the chagrin of many. According to sources, Prime Minister Harper is encouraging MP’s to pass the bill ‘as quickly as possible.’ NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, who we spoke to last month, has repeatedly called for amendments and has criticised the bill for its vague wording. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau says while he will support the bill, he says more time is needed to make an informed decision.
