Frozen pipes a major issue in Guelph this winter

Frozen pipes are becoming a major issue in Guelph this winter.

The City of Guelph says since the beginning of February, 30 temporary water lines have had to be installed because of the extreme cold.

Officials say they’re working hard to make sure everyone has access to water and crews are working hard to thaw service lines, but it could be mid-April before some services thaw.

In a statement, city officials say they’re getting plenty of calls about pipes freezing during the bone chilling temperatures.

“This year we’re getting as many calls about pipes freezing inside people’s homes as we are about frozen City services. We’re working as fast as we can to ensure all customers have access to water,” said Peter Busatto, general manager of the City’s Water Services department. “People can protect their household plumbing by keeping pipes warm and insulating them.”

They’re reminding residents to keep areas where pipes run warm by opening doors and cupboards and insulating pipes.
